The Punjab Government has expanded skill development and vocational training initiatives for children residing in Observation Homes and Special Homes under the Juvenile Justice system, with 48 children in Hoshiarpur successfully completing job-oriented courses.
Cabinet Minister for Social Security, Women and Child Development Dr. Baljit Kaur said the initiative is aimed at providing children in conflict with law with education, practical skills and opportunities to build a dignified and self-reliant future.
Of the 48 children who completed training at the Special Home and Observation Home in Hoshiarpur, 25 from the Special Home completed a Hair Dresser and Stylist course, while 23 children from the Observation Home completed a Multi Skill Technician course.
All 48 children participated fully in the training programme, while their assessment and certification processes have also been completed. The minister said the training would help the children acquire practical skills, strengthen their confidence and prepare them for future employment opportunities.
Dr. Baljit Kaur further said that, on her directions, skill development and vocational training courses have been initiated for 187 children residing in Observation Homes and Special Homes across Punjab.
The courses are being selected by taking into account the children’s interests, capabilities and potential employment prospects, she said.
The programmes are being implemented by the Department of Social Security, Women and Child Development in collaboration with the Punjab Skill Development Mission (PSDM).
Dr. Baljit Kaur said the initiative goes beyond providing certificates, with the focus being on imparting practical skills and supporting the children’s successful reintegration into society. The department is also working to facilitate employment and placement opportunities for those completing the courses, based on their skills and abilities.
The minister said children covered under the Juvenile Justice system require not only care and protection but also proper guidance, skills and opportunities to realise their potential.
She emphasised that skill development can play an important role in building confidence and enabling children to make a fresh start in life.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said the Punjab Government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is committed to providing equal opportunities to every child and strengthening people-centric initiatives aimed at building a “Rangla Punjab”, where children can move forward with dignity and confidence.
