Surat city police’s Special Operations Group (SOG), in coordination with the district health department, arrested eight people for allegedly practising medicine without recognised medical qualifications during raids on clinics in the Pandesara area, officials said on Thursday.
The raids were conducted on September 16 following directions from Surat Police Commissioner Wabang Jamir to identify people allegedly running clinics without medical degrees or on the basis of purportedly fake qualifications.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajdeepsinh Nakum.
According to police, SOG personnel had received information about several clinics in Pandesara allegedly being operated by people posing as doctors. Head Constable Jagshibhai Shantibhai and Police Constable Devendradan Gambhirdan conducted verification using dummy patients at eight locations, following which the information was confirmed, police said.
The SOG subsequently coordinated with the district health department for simultaneous raids. Chief District Health Officer Dr Anil Patel formed three teams of health officials, while the SOG deployed three teams led by Inspector K.A. Savaliya and Sub-Inspectors M.D. Sarvaiya and M.D. Hadiya.
The eight people arrested were identified as Parth Debnath, 40; Siddharth Debnath, 38; Vinodkumar Sahani, 36; Manoranjan Biswal, 54; Sajal Biswas, 21; Vijay Yadav, 55; Sandeep Sonawane, 49; and Shyamnarayan Gupta, 53.
Police said Debnath was allegedly operating Prince Clinic near Kailash Chowkdi in Ranchhodnagar Society. A Class 12 pass, he had allegedly been running the clinic for two years and claimed his experience came from his father, who was a BHMS doctor.
His brother, Siddharth Debnath, was allegedly running S.K. Clinic in Ishwarnagar. Police said he was also a Class 12 pass and had been operating the clinic for four years, citing his father’s BHMS qualification as his source of medical experience.
Vinodkumar Sahani was allegedly practising at Angel Clinic in Shivam Nagar Society on Bamroli Road. Police said he had been operating the clinic for three years and had previously worked as an operation-theatre assistant at different hospitals.
Manoranjan Biswal was allegedly running Pragati Clinic in Hariom Nagar Society in the Gujarat Housing Board area. Police said he had studied BSc and BAMS and had been operating the clinic for two years.
Sajal Biswas was allegedly running Sai Baba Clinic at Ganesh Complex in Karmayogi Society. Police said the 21-year-old, who had passed Class 12, had worked as a hospital compounder and had been operating the clinic for two years.
Vijay Yadav was allegedly running an unnamed clinic on the first floor of Jay Pawan Medical and General Stores on Gowalk Road in Radheshyam Nagar. Police said he was a Class 12 pass, had 15 years of experience as a hospital compounder and had been operating the clinic for five years.
Sandeep Sonawane was allegedly running a clinic identified as ‘Dawakhana’ in Karmayogi Society on Bamroli-Gowalk Road. Police said he was a Class 12 pass and had worked for eight years as a hospital compounder at a hospital in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district. He had allegedly been running the clinic for six years.
The eighth accused, Shyamnarayan Gupta, was allegedly operating Shyam Clinic on the first floor of Shivam Nagar Society-2 on Bamroli-Gowalk Road. Police said Gupta had studied BSc, previously worked at a clinic in Varanasi and had been running the clinic for around 10 years.
During the raids, officials seized medicines, injections and syrups with a stated total value of Rs 98,825.
Cases have been registered against all eight accused at Pandesara Police Station.
Police also referred to a separate matter involving Parth Debnath. Officials said he had earlier operated a dispensary named Swastik Clinic and had treated a 14-year-old boy, Abhishek Singh, from Pandesara about a month earlier. The boy subsequently died.
Following the death, the boy’s family allegedly raised allegations against the practitioner, after which an accidental death case was registered at Pandesara Police Station. Police said the matter remains under investigation.
