India opener Abhishek Sharma credited his meticulous, bowler-specific preparation for his explosive run of form after smashing a breathtaking 108 off 34 balls against Afghanistan in the third T20I at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Abhishek was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series as India completed a 3-0 series sweep with a 127-run victory. His innings also saw him set records for the fastest T20I fifty by an Indian batter and the fastest century by a batter from a Full Member nation.
Speaking after the match, Abhishek said his approach is built around detailed planning for each opponent and bowler, particularly during the powerplay and the early middle overs.
“It all depends on the process I’ve been doing before every series. It’s very particular for me against whom I’m going to play and who are going to be the bowlers,” he said.
The left-hander added that he does not believe one or two unsuccessful series would change India’s aggressive batting approach, which he said the team has followed for the past two years.
“As a batter, as a cricketer, sometimes it’s going to go up and down. But it’s the team dressing room momentum and the way we all think about it. That’s very important,” Abhishek said.
He credited the captain, coach and team management for giving players the confidence and clarity to maintain an attacking style of cricket.
“Once you want to play in this certain way, it’s very important that the captain and the coach have to be on your side,” he said, adding that the backing from the leadership has helped the team sustain its approach.
Asked about his ability to score around the ground, Abhishek said he prefers to react to the ball rather than restrict himself to particular areas.
“I just want to go and express myself, and I don’t want to force the ball. I just want to see and hit it,” he said.
He acknowledged that consistency cannot be guaranteed in every match but said the team’s emphasis remains on dominating the powerplay and maintaining an attacking mindset.
Abhishek also ended the presentation on a lighter note, wishing a fan in the crowd: “Happy birthday to whoever is there.”
