A 23-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her husband using the tag attached to an identity card at a lodge in Doddaballapura in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapura district, police said on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Vidya, a resident of Nagaregere village in Gauribidanur taluk. Her husband, Anand, has been accused of the killing and is currently absconding.
According to preliminary police information, Anand allegedly used the identity card tag to strangle Vidya, resulting in her death. He allegedly took her mobile phone before fleeing the lodge.
Vidya and Anand had reportedly fallen in love and married around four years ago. They have a son and had been living in a rented house in Gandhinagar, Doddaballapura.
The couple had allegedly been facing family disputes for around six months. Following the differences, Vidya reportedly separated from Anand about two months ago and moved to a paying guest accommodation in Bengaluru.
Anand had subsequently filed a missing-person complaint at the Doddaballapura Women’s Police Station, claiming that his wife was missing.
Around 20 days ago, police traced Vidya and counselled the couple before sending her back with Anand, according to preliminary information.
However, on Wednesday, Anand allegedly took Vidya to a lodge in Doddaballapura, where he allegedly strangled her before fleeing the scene.
A case has been registered at Doddaballapura Town Police Station, and police have launched a search for Anand.
Police said the exact circumstances and motive behind the alleged killing will be established after Anand is apprehended. Further investigation is underway.
