More than 2.75 lakh students are eligible to vote in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections on Friday, with elaborate security arrangements, including more than 600 police personnel, deployed across the university campus.
Polling for the four central posts — president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary — is being conducted in two shifts. Day students will vote from 8.30 a.m. to 1 p.m., while students attending evening classes will cast their ballots from 3 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. Counting is scheduled for September 19.
Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh had directed colleges to strengthen security arrangements. More than 150 police officers are equipped with body-worn cameras, while CCTV cameras and drones are being used for surveillance. Women police personnel have also been deployed at women’s colleges.
The presidential contest features ABVP’s Yash Dabas, NSUI’s Vijay Shankar Meena and candidates from other student organisations. The final provisional list has seven candidates for president, five for vice-president and four each for secretary and joint secretary.
ABVP has fielded Ishu Maurya for vice-president, Riya Chhawdi for secretary and Lakshyaraj Singh for joint secretary. NSUI’s panel comprises Veer Chatrath for vice-president, Namrata Chaudhary for secretary and Gopal Choudhary for joint secretary.
The contest also includes candidates backed by other student organisations. The AAP-linked Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP) has fielded Ashmit Kumar for president and Pankaj Kumar for secretary. The AISA-SFI alliance has nominated Ananya Raturi for president.
The elections are taking place amid concerns over student safety and accommodation. Recent campus-related issues, including protests over examination irregularities and concerns following the Satya Niketan PG building collapse, have featured prominently during the campaign.
First-year students who have not yet received college identity cards can vote using a valid fee receipt along with a government-issued identity document such as Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID or driving licence. Second- and third-year students are required to carry valid college ID cards.
