Several BJP MPs extended birthday greetings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, with party leaders Sambit Patra and Tarun Chugh visiting places of worship to offer prayers for his health and long life.
BJP MP Sambit Patra visited the Jagannath Temple in Puri and performed puja, while Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh offered prayers at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar.
Speaking to IANS, Patra said prayers were offered to Lord Jagannath for the Prime Minister’s long and healthy life. He linked the prayers to welfare initiatives of the Modi government, saying people across the country had benefited from schemes including Ayushman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Ujjwala and Ujala.
“We prayed for his long, healthy life,” Patra said, adding that people in Puri had also prayed for the Prime Minister’s continued good health.
In Amritsar, Chugh paid obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib and offered prayers for Modi’s long life and good health. He said the shrine provided spiritual strength and guidance and that he had come to pray on the occasion of the Prime Minister’s birthday.
Chugh said Modi had devoted his life to public service, the progress of the country and strengthening India’s standing globally.
He also referred to Modi’s 25 years in public office and said every moment of that period had been dedicated to serving and advancing the nation.
Chugh cited several welfare and development figures while highlighting the government’s initiatives. He said India’s economy had recorded 7.8 per cent growth and described the country as the world’s fourth-largest economy. These were Chugh’s remarks on the government’s economic performance.
He also referred to the expansion of tap-water connections and housing and said a large number of people were benefiting from welfare schemes of the Union government.
Chugh said he wanted Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ to be fulfilled and Punjab to advance alongside the country’s development journey.
The prayers and birthday greetings came as Modi turned 76 on Thursday, with BJP leaders and other political figures marking the occasion across the country.
