Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn and Tiger Shroff have reportedly received show-cause notices from the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over their association with a Vimal Elaichi advertisement, with the regulator alleging that the campaign could amount to surrogate promotion of Vimal Pan Masala.
The action comes amid the Maharashtra FDA’s wider enforcement drive against gutka and pan masala products containing tobacco or nicotine.
According to the notices, Ajay Devgn was served at his residence in Juhu, while Shah Rukh Khan received the notice at Mannat in Bandra. Tiger Shroff was served through his production company, Tiger Shroff Productions LLP.
The FDA has sought explanations from the actors regarding their participation in the advertisement, stating that the campaign appears to create an indirect association with the Vimal Pan Masala brand.
The regulator said the Vimal brand is primarily associated with pan masala, whose manufacture, storage, transportation, distribution and sale have been prohibited in Maharashtra for one year under a prohibition order issued by the Commissioner of Food Safety, Maharashtra, on July 13, 2026, under Section 30(2)(a) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The FDA has also invoked Section 24 of the Act, which prohibits misleading or deceptive advertisements relating to food products. Section 53 provides for a penalty of up to Rs 10 lakh for those involved in publishing misleading food advertisements.
The notices form part of the state regulator’s broader food safety campaign, which includes action against food and milk adulteration, the sale of unhealthy food products near educational institutions, and the manufacture and distribution of prohibited gutka and tobacco-containing pan masala.
The FDA has intensified inspections and enforcement measures in recent months, including seizures and action against entities allegedly violating food safety regulations.
