Senior Punjab Congress leader and MLA Pargat Singh has demanded a statewide investigation into hotels and guest houses operating near bus stands, railway stations, schools and colleges, alleging that some such establishments may be involved in illegal activities including blackmail, trapping youth in criminal conspiracies and drug trafficking.
Raising the issue during the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Monsoon Session, Pargat Singh said serious allegations have surfaced from different parts of the state regarding hotels allegedly functioning in violation of rules and being misused for unlawful activities.
He said establishments located around educational institutions and public transport hubs require strict monitoring as they directly impact the safety and security of young people.
“There can be no compromise on the safety, dignity and future of Punjab’s youth. Strict action must be taken against those violating the law,” Pargat Singh said.
The MLA urged the state government to launch a special inspection campaign involving the Punjab Police, local administration, Tourism Department and other concerned agencies to examine the functioning of hotels and guest houses across the state.
He said authorities should verify licences, operational records, security arrangements and compliance with mandatory legal requirements. Hotels found involved in illegal activities or violating regulations should face cancellation of licences and strict legal action, he added.
At the same time, Pargat Singh cautioned that genuine hotel operators following rules should not be harassed during such inspections. He said action should be targeted only against those involved in unlawful practices.
He stressed that the government must ensure effective enforcement of laws to prevent attempts to push youngsters towards crime, drug abuse and other harmful activities.
