Sub-Registrar Justin Manikandan Subramanian, an accused in the alleged fraudulent registration of properties worth around Rs 100 crore belonging to the Dhandayuthapani Swamigal Mutt in Palani, was hospitalised in Madurai on Wednesday after complaining of chest pain.
The development came shortly after Dindigul Judicial Magistrate Bhakyaraj rejected the regular bail pleas of Manikandan and document writer-cum-broker Jayaprakash, both accused in the case.
The two had approached the Magistrate’s court after the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court rejected their anticipatory bail petitions on August 5, observing that granting them relief at that stage could hamper the investigation. They subsequently filed regular bail petitions on August 8, with Manikandan citing his health condition.
The CB-CID arrested Manikandan on August 6 from a house in the Kodaikanal hills as part of its probe into the alleged fraudulent registration of the temple properties.
During questioning at the CB-CID office in Dindigul, Manikandan complained of dizziness and was taken to the Dindigul Government Medical College Hospital. Doctors found that he had high blood pressure and recommended hospitalisation. He was later shifted to the cardiology department’s intensive care unit.
Magistrate Bhakyaraj visited him at the hospital and, after confirming that he was receiving treatment, remanded him in judicial custody until August 21. He continued treatment while in custody and was shifted to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai on Wednesday after developing chest pain.
Jayaprakash surrendered before the CB-CID on August 7 while investigators were searching for him. He was also remanded in judicial custody until August 21 and lodged in Madurai Central Prison.
Manikandan’s hospitalisation comes days after another accused, 65-year-old advocate S. Anwardeen, died after developing chest pain following three days of CB-CID questioning. Anwardeen had several health conditions, including right-side paralysis, diabetes and high blood pressure. He suffered chest pain after returning to Madurai Central Prison and died while being taken to Government Rajaji Hospital.
The CB-CID investigation into the alleged fraudulent registration of the Palani Mutt properties is continuing.
