East Zone captain Ishan Kishan produced a spectacular double century in the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday, entering an elite list of East Zone batters to achieve the feat in the tournament.
Kishan became only the third East Zone player to score a double hundred in the Duleep Trophy, joining Arun Lal and Saba Karim. He is also the first batter from East Zone to register a double century in the final of the red-ball competition.
Arun Lal had previously recorded two double centuries for East Zone, scoring 287 and 214. Saba Karim made an unbeaten 200 in 1995.
Kishan reached his double century in just 270 balls, hitting 26 fours and two sixes. He brought up the milestone on Day 2 by driving Devdutt Padikkal through the covers for a boundary.
The left-hander resumed his innings from his overnight unbeaten score of 111 and continued to dominate the South Zone attack. His innings also strengthened his credentials for the Test wicketkeeper’s role.
Kishan eventually moved beyond the 250-run mark before fatigue forced him to retire hurt. By the time he left the field, East Zone had amassed 611/5.
The East captain also shared a crucial 230-run partnership with Kumar Kushagra for the fifth wicket, further strengthening East Zone’s position in the final.
Kishan celebrated his double century with his arms raised as East Zone continued to pile on the runs. South Zone’s bowlers endured an extended spell on the field, having spent nearly one and a half days trying to contain the East Zone batting, with Kishan’s innings emerging as the centerpiece of the domination.
