Former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who is serving a life sentence after being convicted in a rape case, is set to face custodial questioning over the alleged use of a mobile phone inside Bengaluru Central Prison.
Karnataka Police produced Revanna and another inmate, identified as Pratap, before the Special Court for MPs and MLAs in Bengaluru on Tuesday. The police are seeking their custody under a body warrant to question them about the recovery and alleged use of a mobile phone inside the prison.
The case was registered at Parappana Agrahara police station after an Android mobile phone, a pen drive and a charger were reportedly recovered from Revanna’s cell.
The investigation gained attention after a purported video surfaced showing Revanna speaking on a mobile phone from his VIP cell. The footage also allegedly showed him accessing various facilities inside the prison, prompting police to register an FIR and investigate a possible breach of prison security.
According to police, Pratap, who was sharing the cell with Revanna, is accused number one, while Revanna is accused number two.
Preliminary investigation has reportedly revealed that the seized phone was being used with a SIM card registered in Andhra Pradesh. Revanna has reportedly told investigators that the phone belonged to Pratap.
Police are also examining a diary recovered from the cell, which reportedly contained contact numbers of Revanna’s family members and relatives. Investigators suspect that calls were made to some of his relatives using the seized device.
The proposed custodial questioning will focus on how the Andhra Pradesh SIM card was obtained, who brought the mobile phone into the prison and how the phone, charger and other materials reached the cell. Police are also probing whether anyone inside or outside the prison helped provide the device or SIM card and whether prison security protocols were breached.
Revanna is the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, son of JD(S) MLA H.D. Revanna and nephew of Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.
