A man was detained in Patna after a joint team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Bihar Special Task Force (STF) and local police allegedly recovered around Rs 20 lakh in cash from his scooter during a search operation on Tuesday, officials said.
The operation was carried out near Zudio Mall in the Chitragupt Nagar area following inputs about the presence of a suspect identified as Sandeep Gupta. However, the suspected person was not found at the location when the teams conducted the raid.
During the operation, another resident of the apartment complex allegedly became apprehensive after seeing the security personnel and attempted to leave on his scooter. STF personnel and Chitragupt Nagar police intercepted him and searched the vehicle.
A bag containing approximately Rs 20 lakh was allegedly found inside the scooter’s storage compartment.
The detained man was identified as Anmol Kumar Modi, a native of Chakia in East Champaran district whose family currently lives in Chitragupt Nagar, Patna. Officials said he could not provide a satisfactory explanation for carrying the cash.
The police have informed the Income Tax Department about the recovery.
Local residents said Modi is involved in the iron rod and scrap metal trade and visits his native village only occasionally. His house in Chakia was found locked on Tuesday, while the whereabouts of his family members were not immediately known. Neighbours also confirmed his association with the iron rod and scrap business.
Authorities are now investigating the source of the cash, its intended purpose and whether the money has any connection with the NIA operation. Further details are awaited.
