Actress Ashmita Bakshi has opened up about the pressure actors often face to maintain a certain appearance, saying the entertainment industry has space for performers across body types and appearances.
Speaking exclusively to IANS, Ashmita said actors may sometimes be told by producers or directors to alter their looks or body shape to fit specific roles, which can affect their confidence.
“Sometimes, when you go to a producer or director, they may tell you that you need to be a little thinner. They may comment on different aspects of your appearance and say that you might get a job if you change certain things,” she said.
However, the actress believes the industry offers a wide range of characters and there is a place for different kinds of performers.
“In a particular project, you will find all kinds of actors — thin, plus-sized, dark, tall, fair, and everything else. There is a place for everyone,” Ashmita said.
The ‘108 Base Hospital’ actress also explained that actors may need to work on their appearance when a particular role demands it, but such changes should come from personal choice and professional requirements rather than insecurity.
“If I am a little healthy today, but I want to play a character that requires a very sleek body or a certain oomph factor, and I feel that I cannot achieve that look naturally, then I will have to work on my body and attitude accordingly,” she said.
Ashmita added that perceptions of beauty have evolved and that complexion or body type should no longer define how an actor is viewed.
“The era has gone when only a person’s complexion or body type constituted the definition of beauty. Today, it is about confidence and talent,” she said.
She concluded that unless an individual personally wants to change their appearance, the focus should remain on being comfortable and confident in their own skin.
