Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar on Tuesday assured the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) that action would be taken after he receives a report on the alleged manhandling of the party’s women legislators by police personnel at the Assembly entrance on Monday.
The Speaker said he had the highest respect for women legislators and assured the BRS that appropriate action would follow once the report on the incident was received.
The issue was raised in the Assembly as soon as the House convened, with BRS members wearing black badges and demanding to know what action would be taken against the police personnel allegedly involved in the incident.
Legislative Affairs Minister D. Sridhar Babu said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had sought a report on the incident. He maintained that the government respects women legislators and assured the Opposition party that suitable action would be taken after the report was received.
BRS Deputy Leader in the Assembly T. Harish Rao strongly objected to the treatment meted out to former minister Sabitha Indra Reddy and Sunitha Laxma Reddy, along with other women legislators.
Harish Rao alleged that when BRS leaders approached the police seeking action against those accused of manhandling the women legislators, cases were instead registered against them. He described the incident as an attack on the women of Telangana.
The BRS leader also said the Assembly had turned into a “Kaurava Sabha” and warned that the Congress would face the consequences of its actions.
The Speaker expressed displeasure over Harish Rao’s conduct and said he should be the one to be angry because abusive remarks had allegedly been directed at his mother.
Prasad Kumar reiterated his respect for Sabitha Indra Reddy and Sunitha Laxma Reddy, describing them as sisters to him, and again assured the House that he would take action after receiving the report.
Minister Sridhar Babu, meanwhile, alleged that BRS legislators were attempting to intimidate the Speaker and condemned what he described as derogatory remarks against him.
Harish Rao countered that BRS MLC Tata Madhu had already clarified that he had not used any derogatory or abusive language against the Speaker, but was nevertheless arrested and sent to jail.
