Actress Manisha Koirala paid tribute to her grandfather and former Nepal Prime Minister B.P. Koirala on his birth anniversary, remembering his contribution to democracy, human dignity, national unity and Nepal’s progress.
The ‘Dil Se’ actress shared two black-and-white photographs of B.P. Koirala on Instagram and reflected on his vision of ‘Rastriya Melmilap’, or national reconciliation. She highlighted his belief that Nepal’s strength lay in overcoming differences and working together in the larger interest of the nation.
“On the birth anniversary of B. P. Koirala, we remember a visionary statesman who devoted his life to democracy, human dignity, national unity and progress,” Manisha wrote.
She said his call for ‘Rastriya Melmilap’ reflected a deep understanding of the need for national unity and added that his ideas, courage and vision continue to remain relevant.
“May we continue to build the Nepal he dreamed of—with democracy, dialogue, dignity and Melmilap,” she added.
Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, popularly known as B.P. Koirala, was one of the key figures in Nepal’s political history. A writer, revolutionary and prominent leader of the Nepali Congress, he became Nepal’s first democratically elected Prime Minister and served from 1959 to 1960.
B.P. Koirala was the elder brother of former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and younger brother of former Prime Minister Matrika Prasad Koirala. He was also the maternal grandfather of Bollywood actors Manisha Koirala and Siddharth Koirala.
B.P. Koirala died of oropharyngeal cancer in Kathmandu in 1982 at the age of 67. Before his death, he had returned to Nepal after undergoing medical treatment in the United States.
