Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday assured strict action against those accused in the alleged murder of Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram Singh, saying Delhi Police has told him that a strong chargesheet will be filed within two weeks.
Singh died a day earlier after allegedly being assaulted by a group of delivery workers and dhaba staff outside his apartment in Delhi. The incident reportedly followed an argument over noise and music.
Calling the incident “very tragic”, Rijiju said he had spoken to senior Delhi Police officials, including the IGP of the South Delhi range, the DCP and Joint Commissioner of the Special Cell for the Northeast.
“All eight individuals involved in the incident have been arrested,” Rijiju said, adding that police officials had also met Singh’s family. Arrangements have been made to transport the musician’s mortal remains to Manipur on Wednesday.
According to the minister, preliminary information gathered by investigators indicates that all eight accused work at a dhaba or as delivery workers. He said they belong to different states and communities and that the dispute broke out at night over music and noise.
Rijiju said Delhi Police had assured him that a strong chargesheet would be filed within two weeks.
He also criticised Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for raising the issue on social media and highlighting concerns over the safety of people from the Northeast in Delhi.
Responding to Gandhi’s remarks, Rijiju said incidents of murder should not be viewed through the lens of a victim’s state or regional identity. He stressed that people from the Northeast are citizens of India and said the matter should not be politicised.
Rijiju praised the Delhi Police for acting swiftly, saying the accused had fled after the incident but were apprehended within a short period.
Expressing condolences to Singh’s family, the minister said the accused should receive strict punishment and assured that action would be taken at the earliest.
