A Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah was diverted to Chennai on Monday after a technical issue involving one of its engines, with all 186 people onboard landing safely, airport officials said.
The Boeing aircraft, operating as Malaysia Airlines flight MH156, was diverted to Chennai International Airport after a problem was reported with Engine No. 2. A full emergency was declared at the airport as emergency response teams were activated to facilitate the aircraft’s safe arrival.
The aircraft landed safely and was brought to a halt without any reported incident. Airline technical personnel and other relevant teams subsequently began examining the aircraft to establish the nature and extent of the technical problem.
“Further assessment of the aircraft and the technical issue is being carried out by the airline and relevant technical teams,” a Chennai airport spokesperson said.
The aircraft’s onward journey will be decided after the technical assessment is completed. Despite the emergency response, normal airport operations continued without disruption, officials said.
In a separate incident, an Air India Express flight operating from Tiruchirappalli to Singapore was also diverted to Chennai International Airport following a technical issue.
A “local standby” was declared at Chennai airport in view of the situation, placing operational and emergency response agencies on alert and keeping necessary arrangements in place for the aircraft’s arrival.
The Air India Express aircraft landed safely and vacated the runway under its own power. No untoward incident was reported.
The airline’s engineering and technical teams are assessing the reported issue. Airport officials said normal operations continued.
