Four people were fatally shot on a commuter train in the Chicago area early Monday morning, and it appears they were attacked while asleep in their seats, according to the latest update from police.
The victims, whose identities have not yet been released, were sitting apart and appeared to be asleep at the time of the attack, said the Forest Park Police Department after reviewing security footage. They did not resist when the attack occurred.
A suspect has been taken into custody, and a weapon has been recovered, according to Forest Park Deputy Chief Chris Chin, who spoke at a news conference. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, and the suspect’s identity has not been disclosed.
“This appears to be an isolated incident on this unfortunate day,” Chin stated. “It’s a horrible situation.”
The police department received a 911 call around 5:27 a.m. reporting victims with gunshot wounds on a Chicago Transit Authority train at the Blue Line station located at 711 Desplaines Avenue in Forest Park.
Upon arrival, police found four people with gunshot wounds. Three of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the fourth died at Loyola University Medical Center, according to police. All four were passengers on the train.
The shooting occurred across two train cars while the train was moving, Deputy Chief Chin explained during the news conference.
The suspect, identified through security footage, was later found on a Pink Line train. Chicago police apprehended the suspect after noticing a passenger who matched the shooter’s description.
Forest Park police also mentioned they are looking to locate a person who they believe witnessed the attack.
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) condemned the shooting, describing it as a “heinous and egregious act of violence” that should never have occurred on a public train.
