Delhi-NCR remained affected by widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruption to normal life on Saturday as continuous rainfall entered its second day, prompting some offices and institutions to permit employees to work from home.
Several parts of Delhi, including Vasant Kunj, Okhla Mod, Kalindi Kunj and Delhi-Karnal Road, reported waterlogging. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Delhi for two days, forecasting heavy rainfall and advising residents to exercise caution.
With the Yamuna continuing to rise amid persistent rainfall, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were deployed at Kalindi Kunj Bhola Ghat to monitor the situation and take preventive measures.
Rain returned to several parts of the capital on Saturday afternoon, further affecting commuters. Waterlogging remained at Okhla Mod, where traffic had largely resumed as water levels receded, although around one to two feet of water was still present on stretches of the road.
Traffic was also disrupted on Delhi-Karnal Road, or Mahatma Gandhi Marg, behind the Red Fort after a Delhi Jal Board pipeline reportedly burst, flooding the area. Water pumps were deployed to remove the accumulated water, while Delhi Traffic Police personnel regulated traffic and managed diversions.
Shooting Range Road, connecting Delhi with Faridabad, also witnessed major traffic congestion. Rain-induced waterlogging left commuters stranded for hours on Friday night, with long queues extending from Tughlakabad towards Surajkund and Faridabad. The congestion continued until around midnight.
Noida too faced severe waterlogging in Sector 16, Sector 18, Sector 3, Sector 4 and beneath the Mahamaya Flyover in Sector 95. Several vehicles, particularly two-wheelers, reportedly broke down after getting submerged in rainwater.
A commuter, Naeem, said he was travelling from Kalindi Kunj towards Kashmere Gate when he encountered heavy waterlogging beneath the Mahamaya Flyover.
“My bike broke down, and many other people’s bikes have also broken down. Because of this, we are not even able to reach our workplaces,” he said.
Another commuter described the journey from Film City to Sector 30 via Sector 4 as a major ordeal, saying the route normally takes around 20 minutes but took nearly one hour and 45 minutes because of waterlogging and traffic jams in Sectors 16, 18, 3 and 4.
In Haryana, several areas also reported water accumulation. Roads in parts of Bhiwani were flooded, while Charkhi Dadri witnessed extensive waterlogging that disrupted traffic and daily activities, with the situation once again raising concerns over drainage infrastructure and stormwater drain maintenance.
Despite the disruptions, the rain brought some relief from the heat in Delhi. The Safdarjung weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 27.5 degrees Celsius on Friday, which was 6.7 degrees below normal.
The IMD has forecast generally cloudy conditions in Delhi on Saturday, with light to moderate rain at several places. The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to be between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius. Light to moderate winds at 10-20 kmph are also expected.
