West Bengal Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul on Friday demanded the arrest of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging her involvement in the larger conspiracy surrounding the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
Paul alleged that former Trinamool Congress Chief Whip in the West Bengal Assembly Nirmal Ghosh, Trinamool Congress councillor from Panihati Municipality Somanth Dey and Sanjeev Banerjee, a neighbour of the victim’s family, were involved in the “conspired and hurried cremation” of the victim’s body at a crematorium in Panihati.
Ghosh and Banerjee have already been arrested, while Dey is reportedly missing.
“If Ghosh and Banerjee can be arrested for being part of the bigger conspiracy, why should the former Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, not also be arrested on the same grounds?” Paul asked while speaking to reporters.
The BJP leader also questioned Banerjee’s actions after the victim’s body was recovered on the morning of August 9, 2024.
“She kept instructing the police from Jharkhand. Why did she allow the post-mortem of the body after 6 p.m., which is generally not the practice? Why did she not order the police to preserve the body?” Paul alleged.
She further accused the former Chief Minister of attempting to influence the victim’s family through the police.
“She tried to bribe the victim’s parents through the police so that they would not open their mouths,” Paul alleged.
Meanwhile, Ghosh, who was arrested in Odisha on Thursday evening, was brought to Khardah Police Station under the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate on Friday before being taken to Barrackpore Court.
Ghosh faced strong public anger while being escorted from the police station. Locals reportedly hurled eggs at him and some slapped him. Ghosh put on a helmet to protect himself as police personnel escorted him through the crowd and placed him inside a police van.
Ghosh is the former Trinamool Congress legislator from Panihati Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district, where the victim’s ancestral home is located. The current BJP legislator from Panihati is the victim’s mother, Ratna Debnath.
