A team of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) on Thursday visited Toor Banjara village in Sangrur and met the family of late Gulzar Singh, taking stock of the action taken by the Punjab Government and district administration in the matter.
During the interaction, the family expressed satisfaction with the steps taken so far by the government and authorities and informed the NCSC team that the assistance assured to them was being provided.
Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Poonamdeep Kaur (IAS) said the Punjab Government had already released Rs. 5 lakh as compensation to the bereaved family. She added that the government had also assured employment to one family member, and the NCSC team was apprised of these measures during the meeting.
The police also informed the Commission about the progress of the investigation. Four persons have been arrested in connection with the case, while efforts are continuing to apprehend the remaining accused.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by an officer of Additional Director General of Police rank, is conducting a detailed probe into the matter. The authorities said strict action was being taken in accordance with the law.
The district administration apprised the NCSC team of the assistance extended to the family and the steps being taken as part of the ongoing investigation. It also assured the Commission of full cooperation in the matter.
The administration said it would continue to provide all necessary assistance to the bereaved family and facilitate the implementation of the assurances made by the government. It also reiterated that further action would be taken strictly in accordance with law.
