Abaan Ahmed, the youngest son of slain gangster-turned-politician and former Samajwadi Party MP Atiq Ahmed, died in a road accident on Thursday while travelling to meet his jailed elder brother Ali Ahmed, police officials said.
The fatal accident took place on the Jhansi-Kanpur National Highway near the Poonch area of Uttar Pradesh. According to preliminary information, the vehicle carrying Abaan and his associates allegedly lost control and rammed into a highway divider.
Abaan, who was reportedly driving the car, and one of his associates died in the crash. Three other occupants sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment.
Police and local administration officials reached the spot after receiving information about the accident and shifted the injured to a nearby medical facility. Doctors declared Abaan and another victim dead on arrival, while the injured were provided initial treatment before being referred to Maharani Laxmibai Medical College.
The damaged vehicle was found severely wrecked, with its front portion completely destroyed due to the impact of the collision. Police have begun an investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident.
Preliminary assessment suggests that overspeeding and rash driving may have caused the vehicle to lose control, officials said. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination.
Abaan was travelling to meet his brother Ali Ahmed, who is lodged in Jhansi jail in an extortion case and faces allegations in connection with several other cases, including the February 2023 murder of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case.
Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were killed in April 2023 while they were being taken for a mandatory medical examination in Prayagraj. The two were shot dead by three men posing as journalists, and the incident was broadcast live on television.
