Around 200 people were detained by Delhi Police in and around Jantar Mantar on Saturday as security was tightened ahead of a proposed protest by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, officials said.
The detentions came amid heightened security across the national capital, with police checking vehicles at Delhi’s borders, deploying personnel equipped with body cameras and using drones to monitor key locations.
Earlier, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and party spokespersons Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport after arriving in Delhi for the demonstration.
Police personnel reportedly entered the aircraft carrying Dipke after it landed. A video shared by Dipke on social media showed officers approaching him and other CJP members. In the footage, Dipke was heard telling the police, “I have come here to be arrested; arrest me.”
The CJP subsequently announced the detentions in a social media post, naming Dipke, Das and Ranka.
Social media influencer Dhruv Rathee was also detained at his residence in Gurugram, according to a post on the CJP’s X account. The post claimed that around 50 police personnel in plain clothes reached his residence at approximately 8 a.m. and took him into custody.
Security arrangements were also strengthened at the residences of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
Several Metro stations, including Supreme Court and Mandi House, were closed as part of the security measures. At New Delhi Railway Station, Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force personnel were deployed, security marches were conducted and drones were used to monitor the premises.
The protest was called amid Opposition allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demands for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. The security measures and detentions came as authorities prepared for the proposed gathering at Jantar Mantar.
