Chennai has been placed under heightened security ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on October 11, with around 15,000 police personnel deployed as part of a five-tier security arrangement covering key venues, transport hubs and designated travel routes.
The Greater Chennai Police have intensified surveillance and security checks across the city, including at the airport, Porur Bypass Metro station, IIT Madras campus in Kotturpuram, Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam and Lok Bhavan in Guindy.
Police Commissioner A. Amalraj reviewed the preparations with senior officers at the Commissionerate in Vepery on Friday. The meeting focused on personnel deployment and security arrangements at locations the Prime Minister is expected to visit.
The security operation involves officers from various ranks, supported by personnel from the law and order, crime and traffic wings. Armed reserve personnel, commandos and members of the Tamil Nadu Special Police have also been included in the deployment.
Police have stepped up vehicle checks on major roads and intensified inspections at lodges, guest houses, star hotels and other accommodation facilities to identify suspicious individuals.
Railway stations, Metro stations and bus terminals are also under heightened surveillance, with additional personnel deployed at busy public transport facilities and surrounding areas.
As part of the preventive measures, areas around Meenambakkam, Guindy, Kotturpuram, Porur and Nandambakkam have been declared red zones for October 10. The restrictions extend to routes designated for the Prime Minister’s movement.
The flying of drones and other unmanned aerial objects has been prohibited in the notified areas.
The arrangements are intended to secure the Prime Minister’s scheduled engagements while maintaining surveillance across key parts of Chennai ahead of his arrival.
