New Delhi, October 9, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat relied on his own strengths rather than studying his opponent’s videos before producing a stunning comeback to defeat reigning world champion Han Chong Song of North Korea and win gold in the men’s 57kg freestyle category at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.

The 23-year-old defeated Han 11-7 in the final, adding the Asian Games gold to the bronze medal he won at Hangzhou in 2023. The victory also marked a significant milestone for Indian men’s freestyle wrestling, with Sehrawat becoming the first Indian to win gold in the 57kg category at the 2026 Games.

Speaking to IANS, Sehrawat revealed that his coach had advised him to avoid watching videos of opponents on his mobile phone and concentrate instead on executing his own wrestling strategy.

“My coach told me to fight my own wrestling just like you used to do in other matches. Don’t play according to the opponent’s wrestling style. I was told not to watch anyone’s video on the phone. I was advised to fight in my own way and that I would bring the gold medal. So that’s what happened,” Sehrawat said.

Late Comeback Seals Dramatic Victory

Sehrawat appeared to be in control of the final after establishing a 6-1 lead. However, Han fought back with a series of moves to turn the contest around and take a 7-6 advantage, leaving the Indian wrestler trailing with less than a minute remaining.

Sehrawat responded under pressure, launching attacks in the closing stages to regain the lead and secure an 11-7 victory.

Reflecting on the comeback, he said such situations were not unusual in wrestling and that he remained confident of scoring despite the dwindling time.

“It happens a lot in wrestling. This is not the first time that this happened. I was running behind with one minute left. But I was confident that I could attack and score points in the end. I was looking not to give points any further,” he said.

Olympic Gold Now the Target

The Asian Games triumph has given Sehrawat another major international title after his bronze-medal performance at the Paris Olympics.

Describing the moment of seeing the national flag raised after his victory as a source of immense pride, he said his next ambition was to experience the same feeling at the Olympics with a gold medal.

“I consider this a very proud moment. Now my target remains to feel this moment in the Olympics,” he said.

Sehrawat’s victory in Aichi-Nagoya represents another milestone in his career and strengthens his ambition to convert his Olympic bronze into gold at the next Games.
