An Assistant Commandant of the Border Security Force (BSF) died after being found unconscious in the Doban area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Friday, officials said.
The officer was found unresponsive and was immediately taken for medical assistance. However, doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.
The exact cause of death has not yet been established, and an investigation into the incident has been initiated, officials said.
The BSF maintains a multi-layered security deployment across Jammu and Kashmir to guard the country’s borders, prevent cross-border infiltration and support the region’s wider security arrangements.
The force is primarily responsible for guarding the International Border (IB) in the Jammu sector and designated sections of the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan. Its responsibilities include monitoring difficult terrain, including dense forests, river stretches and mountainous areas.
To counter infiltration attempts during periods of poor visibility and harsh winter conditions, the BSF uses surveillance equipment, including thermal imaging systems and high-definition cameras, alongside night patrols.
The force has also deployed drone-detection and tracking equipment along the Jammu and Kashmir border to counter the use of Pakistani drones for smuggling arms, ammunition and narcotics.
In late September 2026, the BSF completed the deployment of two additional battalions, comprising more than 2,000 personnel, in the Jammu region. The personnel were redeployed from anti-Maoist operations in Odisha to strengthen security in areas behind the primary border deployment, according to the information provided.
The BSF also works with the Jammu and Kashmir Police on cordon-and-search operations and area-domination exercises in sensitive locations. While the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) handles much of the urban law-and-order responsibility, the BSF continues to contribute to the broader security framework in the Union Territory.
Operational deployments are adjusted according to evolving security requirements, while border surveillance and anti-infiltration measures remain key responsibilities of the force.
