Washington, October 10, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Indian-American Congressman Suhas Subramanyam has condemned the Pentagon’s reported plan to livestream the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the former US Army major convicted of killing 13 people at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009, calling the proposal “blatantly un-American” and demanding the removal of Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Subramanyam, a Democrat representing Virginia’s 10th Congressional District and ranking member of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Military and Foreign Affairs, said broadcasting the execution would undermine the United States’ moral standing and set a dangerous precedent.

“Regimes in Iran, North Korea, and ISIS carry out public executions, not America,” Subramanyam said in a statement.

“Nidal Malik Hasan should face consequences, but livestreaming his execution is blatantly un-American and against what our country stands for,” he added.

The congressman argued that making an execution publicly accessible in this manner would damage America’s international reputation.

“When we do this, we lose our moral standing on the global stage and set a horrible precedent,” he said.

Subramanyam called on the administration to halt the proposed broadcast and remove Hegseth from office, warning that the decision would be judged harshly by history.

His criticism focused on the proposed livestream rather than opposing Hasan’s punishment for the killings.

Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, carried out the shooting at Fort Hood, now known as Fort Cavazos, on November 5, 2009. The attack killed 13 people and wounded more than 30 others, making it one of the deadliest shootings at a US military installation.

A military jury convicted Hasan in 2013 of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder and sentenced him to death.

The attack prompted scrutiny of military security, extremism and the handling of warning signs involving service members.

Subramanyam’s statement has added a congressional voice to the debate over capital punishment in military cases and whether executions should be broadcast publicly. Executions under the US military justice system are governed by procedures distinct from those applicable in civilian federal and state courts.
