Social media influencer Dhruv Rathee was reportedly detained by Gurugram Police from his residence on Saturday morning, hours before a proposed protest by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
According to a post on CJP’s X account, around 50 police personnel in plain clothes reached Rathee’s residence in Gurugram at approximately 8 a.m. and took him into custody. The circumstances surrounding the reported detention were not immediately clear.
Rathee had participated in a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bengaluru on Thursday and was expected to attend the CJP’s proposed demonstration in the national capital later on Saturday.
The reported detention came as Delhi Police intensified security arrangements ahead of the protest, with checks at city borders and additional deployments at sensitive locations.
Vehicles entering Delhi were being checked, while police personnel were equipped with body cameras to record any untoward incidents. Security was also strengthened around the residences of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
Drone surveillance was underway at key locations, including New Delhi Railway Station, where Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force personnel were deployed. Security marches were also conducted across the railway station premises.
Several Metro stations, including Supreme Court and Mandi House, were reported closed as part of the security measures ahead of the proposed demonstration.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Anant Mittal visited the Aya Nagar border to review arrangements. He said special security measures had been implemented at inter-state and inter-district borders to prevent unauthorised persons from entering New Delhi.
“The effort is to ensure that everything remains peaceful and law and order is maintained,” Mittal said, adding that vehicle checks were being conducted as part of the arrangements.
The CJP protest has been called against Gyanesh Kumar amid Opposition allegations of irregularities in the electoral process and the SIR exercise. The allegations remain contested.
