Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and party members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained by police at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday as they arrived ahead of the party’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
According to police, the three were detained after arriving at the airport. Dipke shared a video on social media showing police personnel entering the aircraft after it landed.
In the video, Dipke is heard telling the officers, “I have come here to be arrested; arrest me.”
The CJP also announced the detentions in a social media post, naming Dipke, Das and Ranka.
Dipke had travelled from Mumbai to Delhi earlier in the morning to lead the planned demonstration. The protest was called over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Separately, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was reportedly detained by Gurugram Police at his residence earlier in the day ahead of the proposed demonstration. Rathee had participated in a protest against the SIR exercise in Bengaluru on Thursday.
Security was tightened across the national capital ahead of the CJP’s planned gathering. Police were checking vehicles at Delhi’s borders, while personnel were equipped with body cameras to record any incidents during the demonstration.
Security arrangements were also strengthened around the residences of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
Police deployed drone surveillance at key locations as part of the security measures. Several Metro stations, including Supreme Court and Mandi House, were also closed ahead of the planned protest.
The detentions came amid heightened security preparations for the demonstration, which was directed at the Election Commission over the alleged electoral-roll irregularities.
