Punjab Cabinet Minister Mohinder Bhagat on Friday announced a grant of Rs 1.20 crore for the Government School of Eminence in Bhargav Nagar, Jalandhar, for the construction of science and mathematics laboratories and the development of a sports stadium, while highlighting the state government’s efforts to transform the education system.

Bhagat made the announcement while attending a Mega Parent-Teacher Meeting (PTM) at the school, where he interacted with parents and teachers and discussed initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education in government institutions.

The minister said the Punjab Government was undertaking significant measures to modernise government schools and provide students with facilities comparable to those available in convent schools. He congratulated the Education Department for organising Mega PTMs in more than 1,300 government schools across the district, enabling parents and teachers to discuss students’ academic progress and overall development.

Of the Rs 1.20 crore announced for the Bhargav Nagar school, Rs 70 lakh will be spent on constructing science and mathematics laboratories after demolishing the existing old building. The remaining Rs 50 lakh will be utilised for developing the school’s sports stadium.

Bhagat said the proposed facilities would improve opportunities for students in both academic learning and sports, supporting their overall development.

He added that Mega PTMs provide parents with an opportunity to assess the facilities available in government schools and gain a better understanding of their children’s curriculum, academic performance and extracurricular activities. Teachers can also offer guidance to parents on helping students improve their performance.

During the event, the minister presented appreciation certificates to students who had secured more than 95 per cent marks in examinations and achieved other notable academic milestones. Members of the School Management Committees were also honoured for their dedication and contributions to the development of their respective institutions.

District Education Officer Gurinderjit Kaur, Punjab Sikhiya Kranti Coordinator Sanjeev Bhagat, Councillor Raj Kumar Raju and Deputy District Education Officer Rajiv Joshi were among those present at the event.

The programme highlighted the government’s focus on strengthening school infrastructure, encouraging parental participation and improving educational outcomes in Punjab’s government schools.
