English county cricket club Essex has confirmed that batter Robin Das’s playing contract was terminated before the end of the 2026 season, following his suspension and subsequent unavailability to fulfil his playing commitments. The confirmation came after Das appeared in court on Friday facing two charges of rape.
Das appeared at Inner London Crown Court and was granted conditional bail ahead of a five-day trial scheduled for January 2028. He was charged with two counts of rape in July.
According to the Metropolitan Police, Das was arrested in August 2025 following reports of a woman being raped in Brixton in March 2024. The allegations remain subject to ongoing legal proceedings.
In a statement issued after Friday’s court hearing, Essex acknowledged the proceedings and said it would not comment further on the circumstances of the case.
The club clarified that the termination of Das’s playing contract was a separate decision from the ongoing criminal proceedings. It said his contract had ended before the conclusion of the 2026 season after his suspension and resulting inability to fulfil his playing obligations.
Essex also said it had established safeguarding and disciplinary procedures, which it regularly reviews to ensure they remain appropriate. The club added that it would continue working with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) and the Cricket Regulator as part of its commitment to maintaining standards across the organisation.
Das, who is based in Leytonstone in east London, made one first-team appearance for Essex during the 2026 season. He scored 29 runs in a One-Day Cup match against Middlesex on July 21, shortly before he was charged.
In total, Das made 60 appearances for Essex.
