‘Weak Decision by Strong Partners’: Zelensky Criticises Trump’s Russian Diesel Deal

Kyiv, October 10, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticised US President Donald Trump’s proposed agreement allowing Russia to supply diesel to American and global markets, warning that the arrangement could provide Moscow with additional revenue to sustain its war against Ukraine and undermine efforts to secure peace.

In a lengthy post on X, Zelensky argued that allowing Russia to earn money from petroleum product exports would strengthen its ability to continue military operations rather than encourage an end to the conflict.

“Gifts to Putin will not bring peace or any benefit to the civilised world,” Zelensky wrote.

He warned that Russia would respond to the diesel deal with further attacks and accused the arrangement of effectively supporting a war that should be brought to an end.

Trump announced on Friday that he had reached an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin for Moscow to supply large quantities of diesel to the United States and international markets. He said the proposed deliveries would help bring down fuel prices.

According to Trump’s post on Truth Social, Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel, followed by another 500,000 tonnes in November and one million tonnes thereafter.

The announcement came as a Ukrainian negotiating delegation was in Florida for two days of discussions with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The talks focused on possible arrangements to end the war, including a proposed ceasefire that would halt attacks on energy infrastructure.

Zelensky questioned the timing of Trump’s announcement, suggesting that the Ukrainian delegation’s presence in Florida could serve as a “smokescreen” for an agreement reached between Washington and Moscow.

Speaking to reporters, he said Ukraine’s representatives had travelled to the United States to discuss ways to stop the fighting, making the simultaneous announcement of the Russian diesel arrangement particularly concerning for Kyiv.

Zelensky also pointed to the contrast between the discussions involving Ukrainian and American officials and Trump’s communication with Putin, whom he described as the leader of the war.

He warned that the revenue Russia could earn from diesel exports would help finance its military campaign and prolong the suffering caused by the conflict.

“It only feeds Putin and gives him the ability to fight even more,” Zelensky said, describing the arrangement as a “weak decision by strong partners”.

The US Treasury Department also issued a temporary licence easing sanctions on Russian diesel exports, according to the source report, facilitating the proposed supply arrangement.
