The US state of Georgia is seeking to attract Indian filmmakers by highlighting its production incentives, studio infrastructure and growing film industry, with organisers of the Atlanta Indian Film Festival looking to translate cultural engagement into commercial opportunities.
S.K. Raj, a chamber of commerce board member and former president and chairman, said bringing Indian filmmakers to Georgia had been one of the central objectives of the festival, which recently concluded its eighth edition.
Raj said Georgia had introduced incentives to attract film and media production, with benefits potentially extending to feature films, advertising and other content projects.
He cited a minimum expenditure threshold of $500,000 and said spending could be spread across multiple projects. According to him, eligible productions could receive incentives of up to 30 per cent.
The state’s association with major productions has also helped raise its profile. Raj pointed to the peach logo that appears in the closing credits of some films shot in Georgia, including productions associated with Marvel and The Hunger Games.
He said the state’s established studio facilities and production services made it an attractive option for filmmakers, particularly during the pre-production stage.
However, Raj acknowledged that Georgia did not yet match Los Angeles in every aspect of the filmmaking business. While he described Georgia as strong in pre-production, he said Los Angeles retained an advantage in post-production because of its longer-established industry and deeper expertise.
The festival’s outreach is part of a wider effort to strengthen business links between India and Georgia. Raj said chamber volunteers had been engaging with state economic development officials, small business advisers, the Governor’s office and legislators to help Indian businesses explore opportunities to establish operations in the state.
Georgia, in the southeastern United States, has developed a significant film and television production ecosystem centred around Atlanta. The industry supports a range of services, including location management, equipment rentals, set construction, transport and accommodation.
