Veteran Hollywood filmmaker Michael Mann suffered a minor gunshot injury after a firearm accidentally discharged while he was holstering it at a shooting range in Los Angeles on Saturday. He was taken to hospital for treatment and was reported to be in stable condition.
The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. local time at the Range Los Angeles during a target-practice session. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the incident and said Mann was stable.
A statement from the filmmaker’s representatives described the injury as superficial.
“On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released,” the statement said.
The 83-year-old director, who has reportedly been an experienced target shooter for decades, is known for films including Heat, Thief, Manhunter, Collateral and The Insider.
His most recent directorial feature was Ferrari, the sports biopic starring Adam Driver as automobile manufacturer Enzo Ferrari and Penélope Cruz as his wife, Laura.
Mann is currently working on Heat 2, the much-anticipated follow-up to his 1995 crime drama starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. The original film centred on the confrontation between Pacino’s Los Angeles police detective Vincent Hanna and De Niro’s professional thief Neil McCauley.
Mann adapted the screenplay for the new film from the 2022 novel of the same name, which he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. The story serves as both a prequel and sequel to the original, exploring the characters’ earlier lives as well as events following the first film.
