Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday extended birthday greetings to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, praising his role in strengthening India’s internal security system and efforts to tackle Maoism and the drug menace.
In a post on X, Modi said Shah’s administrative understanding had helped make the country’s internal security systems more effective.
“Warm birthday greetings to Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji. His administrative understanding has ensured India’s internal security systems become more effective,” the Prime Minister wrote.
Highlighting the government’s security and anti-drug priorities, Modi added, “Particularly noteworthy are the successes in eliminating the menace of Maoism and in furthering our dream of a society free from drugs.”
He also wished Shah a long and healthy life dedicated to public service.
Born in Mumbai in 1964, Shah is a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and represents Gandhinagar in the Lok Sabha. He has served as Union Home Minister since 2019 and became the country’s first Union Minister of Cooperation in July 2021.
Shah began his political journey through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its student organisation, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). He received his first organisational assignment as BJP Ahmedabad secretary in 1989.
He entered electoral politics in the 1997 Gujarat Assembly elections from Sarkhej and served as an MLA from Sarkhej and later Naranpura until 2017. He joined the Gujarat Cabinet in 2002 and became BJP national president in 2014.
During his tenure as Home Minister, Shah has been associated with major decisions on internal security, including the abrogation of Article 370, which removed Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status.
