India’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Vipul, has urged the Indian community to remain calm, stay alert and remain indoors during any aerial attack as the kingdom faces security concerns following recent strikes on civilian infrastructure.
In a video message issued on Thursday, the ambassador said India had condemned attacks on civilian facilities in Saudi Arabia and expressed solidarity with the country’s leadership and people.
“We stand in complete solidarity with the people and leadership of Saudi Arabia,” Vipul said, offering condolences to the families of those killed and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
The Indian Embassy in Riyadh remains in contact with the family of an Indian national killed in an attack on Riyadh airport on October 10, as well as hospital authorities and the families of 11 Indians who were injured, the ambassador said.
Flight operations have also been disrupted. With Riyadh airport closed, Air India and IndiGo have cancelled services from across Saudi Arabia, according to Vipul. However, Saudi carriers Saudia, flynas and flyadeal continue to operate flights to India. Travellers may also consider routes through neighbouring Gulf countries, depending on available services and prevailing conditions.
The embassy has established helplines to assist Umrah pilgrims facing inconvenience because of the disruptions. Vipul advised people planning to travel from India to Saudi Arabia to factor in possible changes to flight schedules and other travel arrangements.
“In the current situation, all of us have to remain calm and alert. Especially in case of an aerial attack, we have to remain indoors,” he said.
The ambassador also cautioned people against sharing photographs or videos of the attacks, noting that doing so could violate Saudi law and create legal difficulties.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs reiterated its condemnation of attacks on civilian infrastructure in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, describing them as “unacceptable” and expressing support for the kingdom’s sovereignty.
At a media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said disruptions to airport operations had affected some people travelling between India and Saudi Arabia.
