Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s outfit in the song ‘Saajan Saajan’ from the 2003 film ‘Dil Ka Rishta’ was designed as a fusion of sensual glamour, contemporary construction and traditional Indian craftsmanship, designer Neeta Lulla has recalled.
Lulla recently revisited the ensemble in an Instagram video after receiving a message describing it as a dream outfit for women. She said the costume was specifically designed for the song, with the intention of creating a look that was both sensual and glamorous while remaining rooted in Indian craft.
The ensemble featured a corset-style blouse, a slim leopard-print skirt and trousers underneath, with intricate zardozi detailing. Lulla said leopard print was a prominent trend at the time and that she combined it with traditional embellishment and contemporary proportions.
“The blouse was almost like a corset and the skirt was slim with trousers underneath. Yes, trousers with a slit,” Lulla said, recalling the design.
She described the red-and-black leopard-print skirt with zardozi work as an early example of what might now be called a fusion lehenga or contemporary Indian silhouette.
According to Lulla, the design involved reworking traditional Indian dressing through changes in proportions and construction to create a fresh silhouette for the screen.
Looking back at the outfit today, the designer said its design vocabulary continues to feel relevant, particularly the use of corsetry, bustier-inspired construction, draping and statement jewellery.
She said the jewellery was conceived as an extension of the garment. The corset was complemented by a neckpiece, while a belt featuring trinkets and stonework replaced a conventional fastening on the skirt.
Lulla also emphasised that the costume had to work beyond a static visual because it was created for a dance sequence. The outfit was designed to move with Aishwarya as she danced, turned and performed, making functionality an important part of its visual impact.
‘Dil Ka Rishta’, directed by Naresh Malhotra, was released in 2003. The romantic drama also starred Raakhee, Arjun Rampal, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Isha Koppikar, Paresh Rawal and Tiku Talsania.
