Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay and address students in Chennai on Saturday as part of his ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ (Voice of Students) outreach programme, which focuses on examination irregularities, paper leaks, rising education costs and unemployment.
Gandhi is expected to arrive at Chennai airport before meeting Vijay at 1.30 p.m. at the Chief Minister’s residence in Neelankarai. He is scheduled to address students at Island Grounds at 5 p.m.
The student interaction follows similar programmes held in Kota in Rajasthan, Pune and Nashik in Maharashtra, and Indore in Madhya Pradesh. The initiative aims to provide young people with a platform to raise concerns about the education system and employment opportunities.
According to organisers, more than one lakh students registered for the Chennai event through a website and QR codes circulated across Tamil Nadu. However, entry to the main interaction will be restricted to 10,000 students who have been issued identification cards.
The Tamil Nadu Congress has erected a large covered pavilion at Island Grounds for the programme. State Congress president Manickam Tagore inspected the venue and reviewed arrangements with senior party leaders, including state in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir and joint in-charge Nivedit Alva.
Students from colleges across the state are expected to attend. Large screens have been installed outside the main pavilion so that people unable to enter the enclosure can watch the proceedings.
Organisers have also arranged drinking water, toilet facilities and seating for around 350 invited education representatives, including college principals, professors and former principals.
The interaction is expected to focus on concerns surrounding NEET and other examination paper leaks, rising educational expenses and uncertainty over job prospects.
During his Chennai visit, Gandhi is also expected to meet Congress functionaries and other prominent political leaders at the Taj Connemara hotel. He is scheduled to leave for New Delhi on a 9.30 p.m. flight.
