India on Tuesday strongly condemned the attack on commercial vessel MV Royad Mammadov in the Black Sea, in which two foreign seafarers were killed and three Indian nationals were injured.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the injured crew members had been rescued by Romanian authorities and were receiving medical treatment. It confirmed that all three Indian nationals aboard the vessel were safe.
“We condemn the attack on MV Royad Mammadov in the Black Sea, in which two foreign seafarers were killed and some members of the crew, including Indian nationals, injured,” the MEA said.
The ministry thanked Romanian authorities for their swift response and said India viewed attacks on commercial shipping and seafarers with grave concern.
“Targeting of traffic in international waterways is severely undermining global commerce and the welfare of people across the world,” the MEA said, reiterating India’s call for dialogue and diplomacy to end ongoing conflicts.
The Indian Embassy in Romania also confirmed that all three Indian nationals were among the crew of the vessel. It said one of them had sustained injuries and was receiving medical attention.
Indian Ambassador to Romania Manoj Mohapatra spoke with the three Indian nationals receiving treatment at Constanța County Hospital and also contacted the hospital’s Chief Physician, who confirmed that they were in good health and receiving necessary care.
The Embassy said it was extending all possible assistance to the Indian crew members and remained in close contact with Romanian authorities.
Earlier, the Embassy had said it was working with relevant authorities to establish details regarding the safety and welfare of the Indian nationals following the attack.
The incident comes weeks after India and Liberia launched the 25-nation “Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers” during the UN General Assembly in September 2026. The initiative aims to strengthen the safety and security of merchant crews and commercial shipping against targeted attacks.
