Protests by thousands of people representing several organisations turned tense in Patna on Monday, as police used barricades, water cannons and a lathi-charge to disperse demonstrators at J.P. Golambar and Dak Bungalow Crossing.
Nursing and paramedical students were among those participating in the demonstrations, protesting against examination results declared by the Bihar University of Health Sciences (BUHS) and demanding the removal of its Vice-Chancellor.
Tensions escalated as protesters marched from J.P. Golambar towards Dak Bungalow Crossing. Police had erected barricades to prevent the march from advancing, but some demonstrators allegedly uprooted them and attempted to move forward, triggering a scuffle with police personnel.
Despite the intervention, protesters continued towards Dak Bungalow Crossing, where the administration had established a security perimeter with barricades and barbed wire to restrict their movement.
When some demonstrators allegedly attempted to breach the security arrangements, police deployed water cannons to disperse the crowd. Protesters continued raising slogans amid the water jets, with some reportedly waving slippers towards police personnel.
The situation subsequently escalated, prompting police to resort to a lathi-charge.
Protesters alleged that several students were injured during the police action. According to those participating in the demonstration, four students sustained injuries to their heads, hands and other parts of their bodies. However, the exact number of injured people and the nature of their injuries could not be independently established from the available information.
Rural Superintendent of Police Komal Meena was also reportedly injured during the confrontation.
A major part of Monday’s demonstrations involved nursing and paramedical students of BUHS, who alleged that around 80 per cent of candidates had failed their examinations. They said the results had adversely affected their academic and professional futures and demanded a review of the results and the removal of the university’s Vice-Chancellor.
The claim that around 80 per cent of candidates failed has been made by the protesting students and has not been independently confirmed.
The protests also involved several other groups raising separate demands. One group reportedly marched towards the Chief Minister’s residence, while CPI-ML activists had announced plans to surround Lok Bhawan.
Separately, demonstrators gathered with posters demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
With multiple groups taking to the streets simultaneously, police deployed additional personnel at key locations and introduced barricading and other crowd-control measures to regulate the demonstrations.
The protests disrupted movement at several major points in central Patna as authorities attempted to prevent demonstrators from advancing beyond designated areas.
