Akasa Air on Monday said a software issue identified in certain Boeing 737 MAX aircraft has no impact on the safety of its operations, adding that it is closely coordinating with aircraft manufacturer Boeing to address the matter.
The airline’s statement came after Boeing disclosed a software glitch that could, under a specific landing scenario, prevent pilots from accessing automated flight guidance.
“We are closely coordinating with Boeing and can confirm that there is no impact to the safety of Akasa Air operations. Our aircraft continue to operate safely in accordance with established procedures and applicable regulatory requirements. The safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority,” the airline said.
Akasa Air, however, did not specify whether any aircraft in its fleet had been directly affected by the issue.
Boeing has notified all 737 operators about the problem and is developing a software update to provide a permanent fix. The aircraft manufacturer said the issue was identified in a scenario in which pilots might lose access to automated flight guidance during a particular phase of landing.
A Boeing spokesperson said existing pilot procedures were sufficient to manage the situation safely until the software update was introduced.
“We shared information with operators that reinforced existing pilot procedures for safely handling such cases. Our engineers are working on a software update to permanently address the issue,” the spokesperson said.
The development comes as Akasa Air pursues its expansion plans. The airline is reportedly considering an order for more than 200 additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to strengthen its fleet.
Akasa Air reiterated that its aircraft continue to operate in line with established safety procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.
