Punjab has received a major boost ahead of the upcoming paddy procurement season, with a Cash Credit Limit (CCL) of Rs 42,786.68 crore sanctioned for October. The procurement season is scheduled to commence on October 1.
Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak said the CCL would facilitate accelerated and uninterrupted payments to farmers for the paddy procured by the state government.
The minister also said that the department had received five lakh units of bardana (gunny bags) for packaging paddy brought by farmers to the mandis.
Punjab has been given a procurement target of 180 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of paddy for the 2026-27 season. Kataruchak said the state government would procure the produce at the rate of Rs 2,461 per quintal.
To ensure smooth and hassle-free procurement, 1,887 mandis have been notified so far, with additional mandis to be made operational depending on requirements.
Reiterating the Punjab government’s commitment, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, to procure every grain produced by farmers, Kataruchak said District Food Supply Controllers (DFSCs) had been directed to ensure that no paddy originating from outside Punjab was sold in the state’s mandis.
He added that adequate arrangements had also been made for clean drinking water and medical supplies for the labourers engaged in unloading and packaging paddy at the mandis.
“Our aim is to protect the interests of all the stakeholders connected with the procurement network viz. Farmers, Arhtiyas and the Labourers,” the minister said.
Kataruchak further said that he would personally visit mandis to review procurement operations and ensure that the process ran smoothly.
