Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh has approached the Calcutta High Court seeking protection after allegedly facing two attacks within 24 hours in Hooghly district and Kolkata, amid concerns over his personal safety.
The Beliaghata MLA filed a petition before the High Court on Monday, citing the two incidents and apprehensions of further attacks. A single-judge bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya admitted his petition but declined his request for an urgent hearing, directing that the matter be taken up as per the clause list.
Appearing on behalf of Ghosh, advocate Biswaroop Bhattacharya argued that an immediate hearing was necessary as his client was an elected public representative who had been targeted twice. However, the court did not accept the request for an urgent hearing.
The first alleged attack took place on the afternoon of September 26 at Uttarpara in Hooghly district, when Ghosh was travelling to Serampore to attend a rally addressed by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Ghosh alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers were responsible for the incident.
The following day, Ghosh claimed that he was targeted again in his Beliaghata constituency in Kolkata while leaving his residence. According to him, several people followed his vehicle, and some of them were carrying revolvers.
Ghosh further alleged that the attackers attempted to smash the windows of his car with a hammer and hurled stones at its front and rear windows, causing damage to the vehicle.
He claimed that his car was chased up to Narkeldanga and accused BJP-backed individuals of being behind the incident. Ghosh also alleged that the police had failed to take appropriate action despite the two attacks. The BJP has denied any involvement in the incidents.
Seeking protection from the High Court, Ghosh cited the alleged attacks and the threat to his safety as an elected representative.
The development comes amid political divisions within the Trinamool Congress following the recently concluded Assembly election. The party has split into three separate groups, while Ghosh has maintained his allegiance to the faction led by Mamata Banerjee and her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, which he has described as the “original but minority” faction.
