Chandigarh/Phagwara, September 28, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Punjab Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a scientific and technical investigation into the violence reported outside Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, with Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav assuring strict legal action against those found responsible.

Visiting Phagwara to assess the situation, DGP Gaurav Yadav said police were examining video footage, CCTV recordings and other technical evidence to identify those involved in the violence. He said the investigation was underway and anyone found responsible would face action in accordance with the law.

The DGP said Punjab Police had exercised maximum restraint throughout the situation and made sustained efforts to facilitate dialogue between students and university authorities to resolve their concerns peacefully. He said clear directions had been issued to police personnel not to use force against students.

“Students are our children, and their safety and security remains our top priority. We have made every possible effort to facilitate dialogue between the students and the university authorities so that the issues can be resolved through discussion,” Yadav said.

He stated that multiple meetings had been arranged between student representatives and the university administration on Sunday to address concerns relating to internal matters. The police, he said, remained committed to maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of students, residents and other stakeholders.

The DGP also appealed to the public not to circulate unverified videos, audio clips or misleading content on social media. He urged people to rely on official and verified information, warning that appropriate legal action would be taken against those deliberately spreading unfounded or misleading material.

Yadav said the situation in and around the university was under control, with adequate police deployment to maintain law and order and prevent further incidents.

He added that immediately after receiving information about the violence, DIG Jalandhar Range Naveen Singla and Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora, along with police personnel, had reached the spot and taken measures to bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, senior Punjab Police officers and district police officials have been interacting with students at educational institutions across the state as part of a confidence-building initiative. Senior officers, including DIGs and SSPs, have visited institutions in Fazilka, Sangrur, Ferozepur, Rupnagar, Mohali and Ludhiana Rural to address students’ concerns and reinforce safety arrangements.

During a media interaction, DIG Jalandhar Range Naveen Singla said a meeting involving representatives of the civil administration, police, university authorities and seven representatives of the student committee had been held in a positive and cordial atmosphere.

He said students had raised concerns regarding logistics, hostel facilities and better coordination, particularly the timely sharing of information with students. It was decided that regular meetings would be held to review these issues and work towards resolving them.

According to Singla, the university had assured that demands relating to logistical arrangements would be addressed soon. He said the concerns raised during the meeting were being taken up with the university administration.

Regarding the investigation, the DIG confirmed that an FIR had been registered and the probe was underway. He said a five-member student committee constituted by the university would remain associated with the SIT and students would be kept informed about the progress of the investigation.

Singla reiterated that police personnel had exercised restraint during the situation and denied that any lathi-charge had been carried out against students. He said police had held multiple rounds of negotiations throughout the day and advised students not to take the law and order situation into their own hands.

He added that police personnel had been instructed to handle the situation with care and sensitivity while maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of everyone concerned.
