Congress leader K.C. Venugopal and CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday called for a transparent investigation into the unrest at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab, while urging authorities to ensure the safety and safe return of students from Kerala.
Venugopal alleged that the Punjab government was pursuing a politics of intolerance by denying people the right to protest. He also raised concerns over alleged police lapses in handling the situation at the university.
“An intolerant politics that does not even allow people to protest is being pursued by the government,” Venugopal said.
He said Malayali students at the university had contacted him following the clashes and added that arrangements had been made to facilitate their return to Kerala.
Vijayan, meanwhile, said the developments at the university should be treated with utmost seriousness. He noted that students had taken to the streets following allegations that a female student had been sexually assaulted.
The CPI(M) leader alleged that the university management, headed by its founder and Chancellor, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Kumar Mittal, had attempted to suppress the students’ protest with the help of police and Sangh Parivar workers.
Vijayan called for a strong response to such alleged attempts and demanded a comprehensive and transparent investigation to ensure justice. He also sought an impartial probe into the role of the university management in the various issues raised by students.
Highlighting the immediate concern over student safety, Vijayan said more than 1,500 Malayali students were enrolled at the university. With classes suspended for 10 days following the violence, he said urgent steps were needed to enable them to return home safely.
He urged the Centre and the Kerala government to intervene and facilitate the students’ journey from Jalandhar to Delhi and onward to Kerala.
Vijayan also called for coordination with the Railways to arrange special trains or additional coaches, if required, noting that students could face difficulties securing tickets.
Both Kerala leaders stressed the need for an immediate response to the concerns of students and their parents. While Venugopal focused on the alleged denial of the right to protest and police lapses, Vijayan called for an impartial investigation and arrangements to ensure the safe return of students from Kerala.
