Thousands of Congress workers staged a protest in Punjab’s Ferozepur on Monday, demanding the resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of electoral irregularities and subversion of democracy.
The protesters accused Kumar of acting at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. They also burnt effigies of the Prime Minister and the Chief Election Commissioner during the demonstration.
Addressing the protesters, Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring alleged that Kumar had “subverted and sabotaged” the electoral process, claiming that 13.8 crore voters had been “single-handedly disenfranchised” through deletions from electoral rolls.
Referring to Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Haryana, Warring claimed that electoral outcomes in these states were contrary to ground realities and public perception.
He further alleged that the Election Commission, under Kumar, was colluding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) by deleting the names of voters believed to be opposed to them.
Warring said that when Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi raised the issue three years ago, the Election Commission had attempted to deny the allegations. He claimed that the two Election Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, had now acknowledged what Gandhi had been saying.
The Punjab Congress chief urged party workers to remain vigilant against the deletion of names from electoral rolls in the state.
He alleged that the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was being used in states to delete votes in a manner that benefited the BJP. Warring claimed that 20 lakh votes had already been deleted from Punjab’s electoral rolls and that the number could rise further.
Warring also criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, describing the AAP and the BJP as “two sides of the same coin”. He accused the AAP of manipulating the results of municipal committees in the state and alleged that the government was institutionalising the criminalisation of politics in Punjab.
He expressed concern that criminals and gangsters, including Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and Gurpreet Sekhon, whom he said faced several serious criminal cases, could eventually enter electoral politics.
Warring also alleged that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal were encouraging gangster culture in the state.
Taking aim at Mann, Warring accused the Chief Minister of yielding to leaders from Delhi. He alleged that 10 ministerial bungalows had been allotted to unauthorised people from Delhi and Rajasthan, while ministers were being forced to stay in guest houses.
