Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has directed Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav to visit Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara and personally assess the situation following violent student protests over unverified claims concerning a female student.
The directive came after protests at the university escalated into arson, vandalism and clashes with police. Three police vehicles and campus property were set on fire, while students also blocked National Highway-44, disrupting traffic for more than 15 hours before police restored movement.
The unrest followed social-media claims alleging that a female student had been sexually assaulted by an outsider on the campus and later died by suicide. LPU has rejected the allegation as false and fabricated, while police have registered an FIR against an unidentified person and constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to establish the facts.
Jalandhar Range DIG Naveen Singla said the SIT was examining CCTV footage from the hostel as part of the investigation. No person has been named in the FIR so far. Police are also examining the circumstances surrounding the death of another LPU woman student from Telangana who allegedly died by suicide around 15 days ago.
Meanwhile, LPU has suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28 and postponed its mid-term examinations until further notice. The university has advised students who remain on campus to stay inside their hostels or residences, avoid unnecessary movement and follow official instructions.
The state police are also examining the circumstances surrounding similar unrest at Chitkara University in Rajpura a day earlier and whether there was any connection between the two incidents.
The government has directed the police to maintain law and order while ensuring that the allegations surrounding the LPU incident are investigated on the basis of evidence.
