Guwahati, September 28, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The detention of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) Co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka and several party volunteers by the Assam Police ended on Sunday evening, with Ranka alleging that the action was “illegal” and saying he would address the media from the spot where he was picked up.

In a post on X, Ranka said the alleged detention had ended and that the CJP team had asked police to drop them back at the location from where they were taken.

Ranka announced that he would address the media at Chaudhary Tila, opposite the Assam Secretariat in Guwahati.

The development followed the detention of Ranka and more than 30 CJP workers earlier in the day, according to the organisation. Four members of the party’s central committee were among those detained.

The detentions took place shortly before a regional volunteers’ meeting scheduled in Guwahati. The meeting was initially planned at Assam Shree Parshuram Seva Sadan on Kharga Choudhury Road in Athgaon.

CJP members later shifted the meeting to Chowdhury Tila, alleging that pressure had been exerted on the original venue to cancel their booking.

Ranka had reached Guwahati on Saturday with other CJP members. According to the organisation, the team planned to meet local volunteers, visit government schools and interact with families affected by the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

Before his detention, Ranka alleged that police were preventing the group from conducting its meeting and accused authorities of repeatedly detaining CJP members.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke had earlier claimed that Ranka was picked up from a private residence and that those detained had not been informed about the charges or grounds for their detention. The party subsequently demanded the immediate release of Ranka and the other volunteers, alleging suppression of its activities in Assam.

Following the release, Dipke reacted on X, expressing disappointment that a planned protest outside a police station would no longer take place.

Assam Police had not immediately made a public statement explaining the grounds for the detentions.

Ranka is expected to address the media in Guwahati on the circumstances surrounding the detention and the CJP’s activities in Assam.
