Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut has alleged a Rs 900-crore illegal land scam in Maharashtra’s Konkan region, accusing state ministers and local legislators of facilitating the transfer of protected agricultural and forest land to wealthy investors from outside the state.
Addressing a press conference in Mumbai on Monday, Raut claimed that fertile agricultural land in Sindhudurg district’s Vengurla, Sawantwadi and Dodamarg talukas had been transferred to non-agricultural buyers from Bengaluru, Delhi and Hyderabad in violation of land protection laws.
Citing the Maharashtra Prevention of Fragmentation and Consolidation of Holdings Act, popularly known as the Tukde Bandi Act, Raut alleged that the transactions involved prohibited transfers of fragmented agricultural land without the required statutory permissions.
He accused some ministers and local MLAs of acting as intermediaries for the deals, alleging that a prominent Hindutva cabinet minister from Konkan was functioning as a real estate broker. Raut did not identify the minister or any of the legislators he accused.
Raut further alleged that, beyond the Rs 900 crore reflected in official records, unaccounted money had changed hands and illegal deforestation was taking place on the acquired plots, with buyers already in possession of the land.
He said NCP (SP) leader Jayant Patil had previously raised the issue but alleged that the state Revenue Department had failed to take meaningful action despite a three-year investigation.
Raut also alleged that the Revenue Department’s inquiry over the past three years had not led to enforcement action. He demanded that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis make all Sindhudurg land-transfer records public, including details of buyers, facilitators and any political figures involved.
He announced that he would lead a delegation of local Shiv Sena (UBT) workers to Sindhudurg to inspect the disputed sites and highlight what he described as legal and environmental violations.
The land transactions are also under examination by a committee headed by the Konkan divisional commissioner, according to a report published before Raut’s press conference.
