The Baloch National Movement (BNM) has called for international action over what it alleges are widespread human rights violations in Pakistan’s Balochistan, holding a protest near the United Nations Office in Geneva against enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings and the prosecution of political activists.
The protest was held at the Broken Chair monument as part of the BNM’s September campaign in Geneva, which has included a conference, rally and engagements with international organisations. The Geneva Press Club also hosted the group’s 12th Balochistan International Conference on September 24.
According to the BNM, representatives of Sindh, the Pashtun community, Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir also participated in the demonstration. Speakers alleged that enforced disappearances and killings were affecting not only Baloch communities but also Pashtuns, Sindhis and Kashmiris.
The BNM alleged that thousands of Baloch people had been subjected to enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings and accused Pakistani authorities of restricting civil and legal freedoms in Balochistan. It also cited alleged disappearances and killings in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The allegations form part of a wider international campaign by the BNM. Earlier in September, a BNM delegation met a member of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances in Geneva and submitted a six-month human rights report and a dossier on disappearances prepared by Paank, the movement’s human rights department.
UN human rights experts have separately raised concerns over alleged enforced disappearances, torture and extrajudicial killings in Balochistan. In September, they called on Pakistan to conduct a prompt and impartial investigation into the alleged disappearance, detention and death of Baloch student Imran Ali.
The BNM also held a protest outside the UN headquarters in New York during Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s participation in the UN General Assembly session.
The group has urged the United Nations and the international community to take what it described as immediate action over the human rights situation in Balochistan.
